Lopez High School was built by Gaudencio Vera, Mayor Juan Tabien, Diego Manza and Moises Zurbano. Lopez Junior High School grew out on August 20, 1946. On May 3, 1997 through the effort of Congressman Wigberto Tanada, the school has finally become Lopez National Comprehensive High School with two science oriented class as it main feature.

The school sits at a seven -hectare lot along the Maharlika Highway with a sprawling tree dotted wide span of well-landscape playground, roads and pathways, standard-sized oval playing court. Before, it is built through three of four improvised barracks, with nipa and buri thatched roof, bamboo and sawali, bare earth floor and raw coconut round logs which the student used for school chairs for a half century. Today, Lopez National Comprehensive High School stands in concrete-cemented buildings fenced with concrete panels and iron grills. It is the biggest public secondary school in the town of Lopez and second to the biggest school in the province of Quezon which is the Quezon National High School.

Based on the school data, the school has 2609 students. It is being supervised by ninety-four teachers, three utility personnels, three security guards, one senior bookkeeper and one secondary Principal IV. To sum up, Lopez National Comprehensive High School has 27 buildings, 64 classrooms, two school canteens, four laboratory, seven departments, guidance office, reading center, Math learning center, Science building, court and grandstand.

Every month Lopez National Comprehensive High School celebrates very important events by catering various activities related to the theme of the month. June is the time for Brigada Eskwela and Independence Day. July features Nutrition Month. August is for Linggo ng Wika and Quezon Day. September is a Science Fair. October is considered as the Social Studies Month. This month is United Nation month. November is Math Affair. December the season of Christmas, is MAPEH and Music Festival Month. January is for English Month. February features Values Month and Valentines Day. March is marked as Graduation and thanks giving month.

The school is now a competitive and has holistic approach the students compete and join contest and quiz bees in different subject areas in all levels. The school always participates with other schools during Ani ng Sining Celebration, Coco Anahaw Festival and Rosario Festival.

I am proud to tell that Lopez National Comprehensive High School is the first in Quezon to have its student’s online publication and to initiate EBLOGIT- Evolve to Better Learning Order guided with Information and Communication Technology Summer Training.

Absolutely! Lopez National Comprehensive High School is an excellent cultural transmitter.

Almost-Perfect Structure

Glory and grandeur these two qualifiers fit the ruined mansion of Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson. I was panting not because someone chased after me but a view of landscape that take my breath away. I felt I was in Europe. While walking inside the mansion one thing really caught my attention the almost perfect structure of the house. The edifice of the ruins is of Italianate architecture with Neo-Romanisque twin columns.

According to Felipe , one of the sons who supervised the construction of the mansion making certain that the A-grade mixture of concrete and its pouring was precisely followed. Final touches to the walls were made with egg whites mixed with cement to give that marble-like finish.

Included in the ruins are the following: the fountain, the simborio- the local name for smoke stack or chimney, was the vent used for the mascovado mill of the sugar farm of Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson, veranda lightning, wooden floors, belvedere, small -arched window, tiles in the mansion, the rain gutters and the down spouts.

The monumental size, and impressive beauty of the mansion bespeaks of the way of life of the “hacenderos” in the not so-distant past. So, If I were you I would really pack up my things and visit the mesmerizing place.

Here are some simple ways I have learned from the  Manila Bulletin columnist, Vim Nadera for you to gain more insights into the interesting creature that is called the Filipino:

1. Travel around the Philippines: Go out and see the country. Visit the churches, museums, other places of interest, and the markets. This way, you will learn about Philippine history, will meet the people, and learn about the food and how a typical day in a certain place goes.

2. Observe during holidays and special times: Christmas, Holy Week, elections, weddings, and wakes – these times will allow you a better peek into the Filipino’s practices, values, and interests.

3. Take public transportation: Ride a jeepney, take the bus or the LRT and the MRT. Talk to the taxi driver. You are sure to hear his views about life, traffic, and politics. Observe the other drivers, as well as the pedestrians and traffic enforcers, on the road.

4. Watch Philippine movies: Indie films will probably give you better quality films these days. It is okay though to also watch Enteng Kabisote during the Metro Manila Film Fest to see what most of the Pinoys are watching.

5. Read Philippine writers or authors in English and Filipino: Visit the Filipiniana section in major bookstores.

6. Learn the language: This will allow you to communicate and keep in touch with more people.

7. Listen to Filipino music and artists: You will notice that the songs that become very popular are either very sad or dramatic; tell a good story; or provide some novelty. If you wish to hear music that speaks of what is good in Philippine culture, you may invite the indigenous Filipino rock band to perform for you.

Priceless Moment

This is the  one thing that separates us or bridges us from the rest of the world – our colorful and lively culture that makes us distinctly Filipino. This includes traditions, language, arts, etc. which are found in museums, churches and galleries, found within the heart of the key cities.

Most provinces have their own distinct folk dances too wherein they showcase the elegance and beauty of the way we do things, the way we dress, the way we see things as shown in different paintings, as we have been influenced by events that happened in our history.To prove these statements reliable Ver F. Pacete, an award – winning local historian and tourism officer exposed me to the Negros History, Arts and History (as shown in video). I have learned from him that the manifestation of Silaynon culture is shown in their ironic lifestyle, grandiose houses, palatable foods and ad infinitive folklores.

If you want to ensure the great deeds are not forgotten and to understand the history of one’s nation and to increase patriotism or sense of identity you should study history.

A Worth Remembering Note

The second destination was the first ancestral house in Silay to welcome tourists. It houses Ramon Hofilena’s art collections and historical memorabilia. Ramon Hofilena is the first Asian to order classic comics. He has the wold’s first pocketbooks, smallest dolls. For one hour and thirty minutes he discussed what is inside his house. The level of my culture and arts awareness has increased because of him. Truly, I can say that human life is a process of discovering himself. He has never been the smartest in his peers, but he is the man who has clear cognition of himself and who will endeavor to explore his potential.

People who make a difference in my life and change it to the best

Life is a journey filled with happy and sad memories. Each memory has its own mark in our life, which affects us in many ways…

As part of our ten day training program one of the activities was intended to visit some historical places in Negros Occidental particularly Silay City. Our exciting undertaking began on May 31, 2010. We rode in Bacolod Tay Tung High School Bus and  Ver F. Pacete an award winning tourism officer  is our informative guide.

The first historical place we have been to was the Balay Negrense Museum. One of the twenty-nine ancestral houses in Silay and declared as national treasures by the National Historical Institute.

Each memory represents a specific experience that we have been passed throughout our life and remembers us with specific people that we have been met. Our walk in life is like a trip, sometimes it may be a hard trip and in other times it may be an easy one. Even so, how hard this trip will be, the most important things that we have to know from it are: what we have been learned from it , what are the experiences that we have been passed through it and into which extent it changes our path in life.
